But it seems competitors to Evony, other MMORPG games such as the Grepolis Game, Wewaii and Kingory Game haven’t quite learned from the smart minds of the evony backers.

Grepolis has done a good job of forging ahead with some quality ads, but not to the extent of the selling evony has done through their scantily clad young girls saying ‘Save the Queen’ – to note, there isn’t any Queen in evony either..

Wewaii is a hotelier game, where the player (playing for free) can design and market a resort and hotel business. (Much like the Tycoon or Sim Games. ie: Rollercoaster Tycoon, Hotel Tycoon and the many other games available to play). But their adverts have been more cartoony. Good, but not a patch on evony.

The Kingory Game has been the one that has got closest to the Evony Age 2 Game Ads. With a good looking asian girl featured in their ads, however she is well clothed – more in a geisha style. It’s enticing, and getting close to the strong evony design – but needs some way before it will have the pull.

Sure, Evony owners have spent some decent amounts of coin on producing a solid advertising campaign – not to mention how much they are paying to get users onboard. But the results are there for all to see, having in excess of 20 million users means that surely a good proportion of those users will be buying evony game coins. The purchase of evony gold essentially makes the developers money – the end goal.

Expect in the near future to see a free facebook game app for Evony, much in the same way Kingory has done this. Everiss (Bruce on Games.com) is a retired computer man who had a background in gaming many moons ago – who seemingly regularly finds himself being served a summons or two, has he seems to take a dim view of modern games and takes things very personally.

In the instance of Evony, after Everiss published scathing reviews – he proceeded to spam the developers in all avenues possible. This kind of action saw him chased in court by Evony after their attempts to discuss things civilly with him failed.

But it went further …

Despite court action, everiss developed youtube videos and published personal details of the owners of the game and the whole time he was trying to grab cash from his readers to fund his war on evony.

However it might be over. It seems that in the past 24 hours or so, Everiss has removed the money-grabbing app from his site and with the widget removed, there is little evidence of the carnage before – where everiss went after evony full tilt, grabbing what money he could for himself along the way.

But as the gaming world looks to relax and enjoy games; is it over?

Whats to stop someone like everiss taking aim at a new game in the future? For everiss, an elderly resident of the UK – he was virtually protected from legal action by his location. With many of the new MMORPG games coming out of China, whats to stop someone like Everiss holding them to ransom again and hiding behind the laws of his country?

Fortunately for gaming fans, evony has survived and hopefully new titles can do the same. People power always wins over in the end – and it seems one disrupting voice can’t stop the enjoyment of millions.

Innogames decided a few months back to bring the predominantly german-language based game ‘Grepolis’ based in Ancient Greece and playing along the lines of a free web-based civilization clone – to the english speaking world.

A smart move indeed.

But many felt with the giant killing Evony game so popular and grabbing gamers from all over the web, that Grepolis wouldn’t be able to attract enough users to make it a viable, money-earning game.

How wrong they were.

Similar to what evony did with their web ads, Innogames did just the same – and have smartly placed Grepolis adverts on the net in strategic positions and attracted a good amount of grepolis signups and a massive proportion of those gamers are ’staying’ as in logging into to grepolis and playing regularly.

The real test comes now, with Evony releasing their long awaited sequel. Dubbed Evony Age 2, its a massive roll-out expansion for the original evony game – new graphics, new items, smarter design and an even better gaming-interface will have experienced and long-term gamers coming back for more and possibly newbies could be flocking to evony to check things out for the first time.

Most have expected a ramped up evony ad-campaign, but this is only now gathering momentum.

It will be interesting to see the free online game stakes in say 2 months time, will Grepolis and Evony have cornered the market?

Will the giant gaming houses like Blizzard move to add to their wow (world of warcraft stables) and develop a free web type scenario for the game (a cut down non-subscription version, where possible game-coin purchases are allowed)?
