Grepolis
The online browser game wars just continue to heat up, the latest release is now Grepolis. A German based free browser game, developed by gaming house Innogames – who were behind successful gaming releases such as : Tribal Wars and The West.
It’s becoming obvious to big gaming houses, that subscription based online games are a very lucrative market. You only need to look at how World of Warcraft has pioneered this, but now these free browser games take things up a notch. All browser based, so no need to buy or download software – its instantly playable, most releases are free to try and if the users like it – they can optionally buy game coins. Great model, because everyone wins.
It’s much like the new age Shareware.
Ok, back to Grepolis. Developed initially in the German language, the game has now been ported to English and apparently will also be ported to several other languages too. Set in Ancient Greece – the user must create, build-up and fortify his town as he seeks to conquer the Greek World.
The game takes a Civilization feel, you have plenty of land – including thousands of islands, of which you can explore and settle. Of course if enemies are already there, you will need to defeat them before taking any of their land.
Hero wise – immerse yourself as Helene the Beautiful or other gods such as Ulysses.
Early game play suggests a powerful navy is important, and a good understanding of the ancient Greek Gods and their powers within the game would also be a smart move!
