Evony Player’s Guide

Introduction

Welcome to the Evony Player’s Guide. This guide has been compiled with the aid and input of several of Evony’s top players. This guide will detail the most efficient means to build your kingdom, and introduce you to the game’s mechanics and concepts. We hope you’ll find the guide useful, and your time spent in Evony more rewarding and enjoyable as a result.

Getting Started in the Game of Evony:

This is a free browser based simulation/real-time strategy game similar to the venerable Civilization series. Each player begins the game with a small amount of resources and chunk of land, and from there, may expand and develop their kingdom how they see fit. The online aspect brings additional elements of interest into the game, such as being attacked by another kingdom.

At the beginning of the game you’ll be presented with a series of quests which will serve as a tutorial to the game. It’s recommended you complete these quests to learn how the game controls. Note also before starting your kingdom that you’ll have a 7-day period from the formation of your kingdom during which time you can’t be attacked by other kingdoms. As such, you should ideally begin play during a week where you’ll be able to take advantage of this and develop your kingdom up into a strong and formidable one.

Building Your Evony Kingdom

Let’s start with the actual development of your kingdom. At the top of the game screen you’ll see several buttons. Let’s first select the TOWN option, and from there build your first three COTTAGES and a MARKET. Next, click on CITY beside the TOWN option and move the hammer icon which subsequently pops up in front of your castle. Now build a SAW MILL, a FARM, a STONE QUARRIE, and an IRON MINE.

These various structures represent the building blocks of your kingdom, and all of them bestow various resources. SAW MILLS provide LUMBER, FARMS give FOOD, the STONE QUARRIE provides STONE (bet you didn’t see that one coming), and the IRON MINE provides…you guessed it, IRON.

Continue to develop these structures until they’re close to level 6. At this point you’ll have access to several new structures, such as the BARRACKS, the FORGE, and the WORKSHOP. Build each of these new structures. You can also upgrade your town’s walls for added defence at this point.

Maintaining Your Evony Kingdom

While it’s always fun to build your kingdom, the far more challenging task of actually maintaining the foundation that you’ve built is the hard part. We’ll discuss how to look after your internal affairs in this section.

Firstly, you should always pay close attention to the balance you have between troops and FARMS. The more troops you have, the more FARMS you’ll need. You’ll eventually need far more FARMS than any other structure.

If your population ever drops into the red, you’ll need to build more COTTAGES to attract more workers to your fields. Likewise, if your gold or food ever falls into the red, those particular items are also experiencing shortfalls that will need to be corrected quickly.

Now, choose the TOWNHALL option from the top of the screen. Choose PRODUCTION, and set all production levels to 100%, which ensures your kingdom will be running full steam ahead. From the TAXES menu, set taxes to 20%, which over time will lower the morale of your subjects to 80%, but will bring in the money you need for your early push.

Now take a look at the four symbols to the right, which signify your production trends. The corn cob represents your FOOD, the logs are your LUMBER production, the rocks are your amount of STONE, and the iron bars are your IRON reserves. Each of these symbols has bars to the right of them, the black bar signifying your current stock on hand, and the green bar representing your hourly production rates.

As your production ramps up you’ll want to build at least two WAREHOUSES, which will increase the amount of goods you can store. WAREHOUSES are also safe from plunder, meaning you’ll never lose the contents stored in them. The only thing WAREHOUSES can’t store is GOLD.

Now would also be a good time to build your EMBASSY. You’ll definitely want to have your embassy in place by the time your 7 day protection period expires (it hasn’t expired yet has it? If so, what have you been doing all this time?). Your EMBASSY allows you to chat with others and form alliances with them.

Now would also be a good time to begin ramping up production on your number of BARRACKS, as well as your FARMS to help feed the resulting mass influx of troops. Note that you can build as many as 5 BARRACKS per city, and as many as 10 cities. You can build a new city every time you achieve a new title.

Preparing For War in Evony

Once your seven day protection period has ended, you’re now fair game to other kingdoms, all of whom are looking to acquire resources and further develop their kingdoms just as you are.

Before you attempt to build the Great Wall of China though (or the Great Wall of Brian’s Kingdom, or whatever brilliantly original name you’ve come up with for your kingdom) to keep invaders at bay, know that you’re not without hope, or potential allies. Once you’ve built an EMBASSY, you can ally yourself with other kingdoms and make use of their knowledge and aid.

In the event you do get attacked, the affected city or cities will flash red under their menus, notifying you that trouble is afoot. Your REPORTS button will also flash red. You should begin moving resources out of the affected town(s) immediately to save them from the attackers. They can also be shipped to undeveloped zones if necessary.

After the attack has mercifully ended, check on your citizens to see their state of mind and needs. If their grievance level has risen dramatically, you can attempt to comfort them with food by going to the disaster relief menu found under town hall, then comforting.

Note that you can also be attacked when not online, in which case…there’s little you’ll be able to do. Such is the nature of the game.

Miscellaneous

GOLD – Gold is needed to perform many of the tasks necessary to expand your kingdom. Gold is largely earned through TAXES, and through attacking other kingdoms. The higher your tax rate is, the more gold you’ll collect from your citizens. More citizens will also mean more taxes collected, so you’ll want to constantly expand your COTTAGES.

Too much gold will make you a more lucrative target, so develop a balance between earning just what you need and spending it immediately. In this way you can also kep your tax rate lower, and the loyalty of your citizens higher.

HERO – After developing both an INN and a FEASTING HALL, you’ll have the opportunity to hire a HERO to fight for your kingdom. HEROES have various stats (POLITICS, INTELLIGENCE, and ATTACK), and your choice of HERO should favour the one with a stats advantage in the category you seek. HEROES will also level up, giving them more stat points.

What HEROES can do is govern your cities as mayor for additional bonuses. Mayors with high POLITICS will increase that city’s resource production, ones with high ATTACK will improve the effectiveness of any attacks launched from that city, and mayors with high INTELLIGENCE will reduce the time used by that city to research.

High stats are considered those at 70 or above, so if you can find a HERO with one or more of their stats above 70, you should jump at the chance to hire them. Not that you can switch your mayors at any time to facilitate any immediate needs you may have for that city, so don’t be afraid to move them around and get strategic.

WHEEL OF FORTUNE – This is located outside your castle’s front gates, and should be used daily. Each day you use it you’ll receive an Aries Amulet, and potentially other prizes as well. You can obtain an Aries Amulet each day, but if you don’t claim it on a specific day, it’s gone for good. As such, logging in at least once daily is a good idea. Once you have the Amulet, it can be used whenever you wish.

TRADING – You can freely exchange, trade, buy, and sell goods using the MARKETPLACE. This applies to all in-game items, but not Evony Coins, which cannot be traded or exchanged through any method.

Troops can also be sent to allies so long as their EMBASSY is set to ALLOW ALLIED TROOP GARRISON. Your EMBASSY should be set to do the same as well.

EVONY COINS – These COINS are Evony’s form of special in-game currency, and can be acquired both in and out of the game. In the game, COINS can be earned through quests, or randomly won on the WHEEL OF FORTUNE. Outside the game, players can purchase COINS via PayPal. As mentioned above, COINS, once acquired, can’t be traded or exchanged with other players.

Notes

- As is the case with most online games, there are no cheats in Evony. As is also usually the case with many online games, you’ll see websites and in-game spammers advertising exactly this, that they have cheats to instantly make you rich and powerful. Please don’t be fooled, and simply ignore them.
- In following with the above note, you’ll also encounter plenty of people trying to get you to visit phishing sites where they claim you’ll get free Evony Coins. Ignore them too.
- Evony’s provocative advertising does not unfortunately carry over into the game itself. If you were playing Evony in the hopes of encountering some sexually explicit or even suggestive themes, you’ll be sadly disappointed. Clever (and not even clever, so much as simply knowing their target audience) marketing is all the ads are.
- There is no button or menu option to log you out of the game. Simply close your browser when you’re ready to call it quits and the game will take care of the rest.
