Sahara Movie
Marine workers, explorers and previous employees from the US Navy, LT Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) and LTJG Al Giordino (Steve Zahn) set off on a big journey to Mali in Sahara Movie, to search for what the locals call “The Ship of Death”,
Released in 2005, the Sahara Movie was considered a big financial flop in terms of earnings from the films cinema and DVD release.
In terms of the plot, Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) saves the attractive Doctor Eva Rojas (Penélope Cruz) from being killed, a doctor with the United Nations World Health Organization, who is looking into the causes of a bad disease in the localized area that is killing thousands.
The cause is a vast amount of industrial waste that is threatening to cause an environmental disaster. It is up to Pitt and his associates at the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) to locate the source of the pollution and shut it down, and explore the connection between the deaths and the missing ironclad.
The bad luck for Sahara Movie continued, when the producers were sued by the owner / writer of the original book. The angry writer claimed they had varied the script of the movie from the book and he sued Paramount Pictures over this. Paramount won the court battle and the book author had to pay several million, he then countersued and again lost.
The original budget for the Sahara Movie was $181 million, a sum that would eventually prove too much to get over.
